The Hepatitis C Trust’s Chief Executive Charles Gore this week took part in the latest in healthcare website Treated.com’s ‘Q&A with an expert’ series of blogs. Each Q&A sees an expert provide an overview of a medical condition, including information on things such as who is most likely to be affected by the condition, treatment options and how to access support.
During the Q&A, Charles highlighted the large numbers of people living with an undiagnosed infection of hepatitis C and the urgent need to find these people and engage them into treatment. Levels of testing for hepatitis C in substance misuse services and prisons were also discussed, with rates of testing still too often suboptimal.
Charles outlined the opportunity to eliminate hepatitis C provided by the all-oral direct acting antiviral (DAA) treatments, but highlighted the danger of missing elimination targets without a dedicated elimination strategy and a large expansion of testing.
