LOUIE, ME AND HEPATITIS C

Gemma Pepp is a smart, metrpolitan single parent. She would like another child, but there is one problem: she suffers from hepatitis C, a disease which attacks the liver and from which hundreds of thousands of people unknowingly suffer. It is a health timebomb. The treatment for hep C has unpleasant side effects and the outcome is uncertain. This film follows Gemma over the year of her treatment and charts the effect it has on her relationship with her son Louie. During the filming Gemma also embarks on an investigation into the discrimination and prejudice shown to those who suffer from the disease, the refusal of politicians and many health professionals to take the issue seriously and the potential scale of failing to address this health problem. How will her friends and family respond to her having a disease which many regard as just deserts for junkies? And how does she feel about being one of the lucky 3,000 when there are half a million others, untreated? Will the treatment work?

This is a film of interest to those who suffer from hepatitis C, to those who treat it and all health professionals in general practice who need to be well informed about the disease.
