All Party Parliamentary Hepatalogy Group - Discussion paper on the best location for treatment of hepatitis C

The Government has set out its intention of devolving health services into community settings and this approach offers the potential to make available additional capacity for hepatitis C treatment.

The All Party Parliamentary Hepatology Group therefore convened a discussion forum to explore issues relating to the best setting for hepatitis C treatment. The forum heard from a variety of experts and stakeholders, including:

Professor Graham Foster, Consultant Hepatologist, Barts and the London, Queen Marys School of Medicine & Dentistry
Dr David Mutimer, Consultant Hepatologist, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham
Dr Chris Ford, General Practitioner, London
Ms Sue Russell, Specialist Viral Hepatitis Nurse, North Manchester General Hospital
Barbara Howe, London Lead Commissioner for Hepatology & Director of Specialised Services, NE London Specialised Commissioning Group
Brian Thompson, Senior Lecturer, University of Nottingham
Charles Gore, Chief Executive, The Hepatitis C Trust (facilitator of discussion)

This paper summarises the issues discussed at the forum and is intended to provoke further debate on ways in which greater use of community-based care could be made in the treatment of hepatitis C. It also suggests a number of priority actions to build greater understanding of some of the issues identified in this paper.
