WORLD HEPATITIS AWARENESS DAY 2006 (WHAD)

The European section of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has agreed to support October 1st as World Hepatitis Awareness Day (they wanted to include hepatitis B with hepatitis C because its such a major worldwide problem). This is very important look how big World Aids Day is and there are about 50 million people infected worldwide with HIV/AIDS. In contrast there are about 200 million with chronic hepatitis C and 400 million with chronic hepatitis B.

Together this adds up to 1/10th of the entire world population. What you might call a big problem.

At an international level activities are still being worked out. There are going to be press conferences in both Brussels, where the European Parliament is, and Copenhagen, where the WHO is based in Europe. Musician and human rights campaigner, Sir Bob Geldof, has agreed to take part in WHAD 2006 and will feature in a video news release for use on the day.
