World Hepatitis Day 2021

In 2021 we celebrated the 10th official World Hepatitis Day and 20 years since the Hepatitis C Trust first opened its doors as the only charity dedicated to supporting patients affected by hepatitis C.

The previous year was been difficult for us all and the Hepatitis C Trust encouraged staff and volunteers to get active through walks, running and cycling to increase their health and wellbeing during the pandemic. The pursuit for a happy and healthy team quickly grew into a phenomenal quest to join forces with our community and healthcare partners to collectively make our way around the world by World Hepatitis Day 2021. This was a unique challenge to walk, run, cycle, wheelchair, swim, row or even roller skate the 24,901 miles / 40,075 km equatorial circumference of the Earth.

The map below charted our progress as we made our way westward (to the left) from the UK.

Past World Hepatitis Day challenges have included the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and rising 8,848 meters above sea level to reach Mount Everest by climbing hills all around the UK. This year we went global, with the world as our limit, to achieve our biggest challenge to date. A good dose of team spirit and the support or all our partners was needed, to reach our goal of raising awareness of hepatitis C, as we journied around the world towards elimination.

Together we joined forces to fundraise for our peer volunteers, who have dedicated their time to support our effort for the elimination of hepatitis C, even throughout the pandemic. We also recognize that COVID-19 has had an impact on the mental health and wellbeing of many in our society and will therefore donate 50% of the funds raised to the mental health charity MIND for the important work they do.

Eliminating hepatitis C by 2030 is a big task, just like our biggest challenge ever, but this can be achieved by working together and leaving no one behind. Thank you for joining the Hepatitis C Trust as we celebrated our 20th anniversary and for helping us reach the world together as a global team by the 10th World Hepatitis Day on 28th July 2021.
