Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health takes part in awareness raising walk

Hepatitis C awareness - Scottish Executive News 25/07/2007

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today took part in a walk to raise awareness of Hepatitis C.

The event was hosted by charity C-Level, which aims to improve quality of life for Hepatitis C sufferers through information, advice and support. Afterwards, she launched the charity's open day.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Hepatitis C is a virus which affects thousands of people across Scotland, but there's still a lot of ignorance from the public at large about the illness.

"Organisations like C-Level are helping to change that and to provide support and help for sufferers.

"I'm here today to support the fantastic work they are doing throughout Greater Glasgow to help give those living with Hep C a better quality of life and to raise the profile of the condition among the wider public."

Louise Chisholm, manager of C-Level, said: "Hepatitis C affects over 50,000 people in Scotland today, yet there is a huge stigma around the virus.

"This day is about showing that having Hep C is not necessarily a death sentence and that there is support out there to help people to deal with it positively."
