Gay mens sexual issues

Stigma and discrimination within the gay community

Unfortunately there is a significant amount of stigma and discrimination toward gay people infected with hepatitis C from within their own community. This is not unlike the stigma that existed toward people with HIV in the 1980's and 1990's, which has now largely dissipated. Hopefully openness and honesty will lead to greater understanding in the years to come. Finding support is further complicated by the fact that gay people frequently choose their sexual partners from among the same population as their friends. The Hepatitis C Trust Helpline can provide confidential support to gay men who feel they are not able to discuss their Hepatitis C diagnosis with their friends.
