Insurance and mortgages

It is possible to get insurance after being diagnosed with hepatitis C. But it does require shopping around and you need to be prepared for higher premiums and possible exclusions on conditions caused by hepatitis C. In general, the more long term the type of insurance, the harder it will be to get. This will have an impact on any mortgage linked to life assurance.
Long term policies taken out before diagnosis should not be affected, for example Life Assurance, Income Protection Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance. You are generally under no obligation to tell them you have been diagnosed with hepatitis C. And if you want to increase the size of a Life Assurance policy, many companies have an extension option that allows you to increase the original sum assured by up to 25% without having a new medical test. Check your individual policy as they do vary.
