Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)

Statutory sick pay is paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks. If you have been sick for at least 4 days in a row, employed when you became sick and earning enough to be relevant for national insurance purposes you can claim statutory sick pay. When statutory sick pay is no longer paid (after the 28 weeks) you should claim incapacity benefit.

While all claims are calculated on an individual basis the standard rate of statutory sick pay for a person earning, before tax and NI, and average of £90.00 per week or more is £75.40 from 6 April 2008 to 5 April 2009.

To claim statutory sick pay you must approach your employer. If you are not entitled to statutory sick pay ask them for form SSP1 so you can claim incapacity benefit.
